2027 Volvo Powertrain

For 2027 we’ve built a remarkable new powertrain solution designed to meet the world’s toughest emissions standards. At its heart is the new Volvo D13. Since 2005, Volvo has manufactured more than one million 13-liter engines globally. This next generation D13 VGT engine carries on our reputation for rock-solid reliability.

This D13 is our cleanest, most fuel-efficient heavy duty engine ever. Our legendary reliability, power, and fuel efficiency is now matched with reduced NOx emissions to a level of 35 mg or lower.

The D13’s pure burning power is paired with Volvo I-Shift’s legendary performance. Enhancements in our next generation powertrain provide best-in-class fuel economy for highway customers. While regional haul and vocational customers receive improved fuel efficiency of up to 4% compared to the current D13 VGT.

To meet the new emission standard of 35 mg NOx we’ve enhanced the aftertreatment system. The unit consists of a pre-heater and heater leading to the main DOC/DPF chamber. This all sits atop dual SCR chambers. The entire assembly takes up less space on the frame rail than our legacy aftertreatment unit.

Our new Volvo D13 engine comes standard in all Volvo models for 2027. It is available in thirteen ratings for the VNL, with up to 540 hp and 1,950 lb-ft. In the VNR there are eleven ratings available up to 500 hp and 1,950 lb-ft. See pages 10 and 11 for a full list of available ratings.

Every new VNL and VNR comes standard with the innovative Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission. It helps drivers of all experience levels improve fuel savings and reduce equipment wear. I-Shift now features enhanced electronics. It pushes the limits of fuel efficiency through downspeeding. This allows an optimum engine speed as low as 950 rpm. The integrated powertrain works in unison to precisely match engine speed to road conditions. Shifting speed has been increased by 30%. A new transmission oil level sensor broadcasts information to the instrument cluster, warning the driver if the transmission oil level is low.

Volvo offers three distinct torque packages to meet your needs: Super direct, Straight torque, and I-Torque. Super direct provides excellent startability. It’s ideal for urban and regional applications run at lower speeds with more frequent stops. Straight torque is designed for customers hauling heavier loads (80,000-143,000 lbs.), who are primarily concerned about performance. I-Torque is a versatile powertrain solution enabling your truck to operate optimally at high and low road speeds. I-Torque maximizes the potential of both the D13 and Volvo I-Shift to achieve greater efficiency, even when roads and loads vary. It combines the benefits of Direct Drive and Overdrive, using the best features of each at appropriate points in the route.
